About Iceland Sauna Build
This sauna build project, located in the remote and breathtaking Leiðarhöfn, Vopnafjörður, Iceland, was commissioned by Ingveldur Einarsdóttir and Ársæll Friðriksson and brought to life by Rintala Eggertsson Architects, a firm based in Oslo and Bodø, Norway renowned for its focus on place-sensitive, environmentally conscious designs.
The "adaptive re-use" project was a collaboration between Dagur Eggertsson and Sami Rintala of Rintala Eggertson Architects, who together with their onsite build team—Ryo Yamada and Paul Kerlaff—sourced local aspen from Skógarafurðir to create a structure within an old boat house nestled within the natural surroundings.
The sauna is not just a building; it's a space designed to embody the values of equality, community, and togetherness that are integral to sauna culture. As Dagur Eggertsson expressed, "We wanted to show the collaborative values and social foundations that lie behind the sauna culture... where sauna goers can strip themselves naked and close the doors to the hierarchy of society outside to enjoy a social moment together."
The project highlights the power of collaboration in creating a structure that harmonizes with its natural surroundings while fostering a sense of equality and togetherness and stands as a testament to the way it brings people together, creating spaces that encourage connection and shared experiences.
